ABOUT ME

I came to physical therapy and athletic training through my own experience as an injured dancer. Because of this, I feel it’s important to take each patient’s entire self into consideration when treating or advising them.

I strive to approach my work with sincerity, honesty, and compassion. I strongly believe that everyone deserves to be both seen and heard.

EXPERIENCE

For the past fourteen years, I have worked in New York City, specializing in treating professional dancers and other performing artists. I have had the honor and privilege to work in smaller clinics that prioritize individualized care, as well as providing backstage care to ballet, modern, and Broadway companies.

I see patients out of the Wellness Center at Mark Morris Dance Center in downtown Brooklyn.

Education

Jessica graduated with her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Indiana University and her Master’s in Dance Science from Laban, London. Prior to that, she earned her first undergraduate degree in Ballet from Indiana University, where she studied under Violette Verdy and other distinguished professors. Her second undergraduate degree was in Athletic Training, which provided her with a background in sports medicine and experience working with Division I athletes. She became a nationally Certified Athletic Trainer in 2004 and a licensed Physical Therapist in 2008.

Training

Jessica completed her advanced manual therapy certification through NAIOMT, is a certified Graston soft tissue mobilization technique provider, an APTA credentialed Certified Orthopedic Specialist, and a certified Bradcliff breathing practitioner.

Interests

Jessica is well-traveled and enjoys experiencing other cultures. She speaks some Russian and fluent French after spending a portion of her childhood in Africa and some time in Kazakhstan. She has returned to Africa as an adult to volunteer as an AIDS prevention educator and consult with local physical therapists. She also enjoys working with children and had the opportunity to incorporate her dance and physical therapy backgrounds while instructing a modified dance class for children with physical and mental disabilities at Maryland Youth Ballet from 2008-2010.

Contact Me

E-mail is the easiest and fastest way to contact me, as I do not take phone calls when I’m with patients or in transit between locations. If you have any questions about my practice or want to schedule an appointment, please leave your name and e-mail address here and I will try to get back to you as soon as I can!

Insurance

While I strongly believe that every individual needs and deserves to have health insurance, I’m sorry to say that as an independent solo healthcare practitioner, I do not participate in any healthcare plans. The primary reason that I do this is so that I can provide the type of individualized, quality care that I prefer to provide. I see patients entirely one-on-one for the entire appointment and do not have any assistants or front desk personnel to navigate the cumbersome insurance communication required to get reimbursed, nor do I want to be forced to make treatment decisions based on what said companies are most likely to reimburse. I happily provide fully itemized paid invoices to patients so that they can submit them to their insurance companies on their own, which often results in reimbursement to the patient if they have met their deductible and have out-of-network coverage.

Cost

Initial Evaluations are 55 minutes and cost $200. Follow up appointments are 45 minutes and cost $170. I do offer a sliding scale for performing artists and am happy to discuss the details on a case-by-case basis. Payment is required at the time of service and cash, check, or Venmo can be used.

Sessions

Initial sessions will focus on evaluation and a review of pertinent medical history. Treatment will be based on a working diagnosis after the initial evaluation and will be individualized to the patient’s needs, but usually incorporates manual therapy, neuromotor re-education, therapeutic exercises, and education.
